Hi guys

Date: Sunday 16 February 2020

Trip leaders : Gordon
and Merrick

for those 4WDriving in the morning OR
12.30pm at Sugarloaf Saddle picnic spot
(in the Cathedral Ranges State Park – see map in attached State Park Visitor
Guide) for those coming for the BBQ / rock climb in the afternoon

4WD level of difficulty:

Easy to medium

Climb/hike level of difficulty:

Wells Cave Track – medium to hardish for old buggers

Canyon Track – easy to medium

Description

This trip is a bit different as we only intend 4WDriving in
the morning and then travelling along the Maroondah Highway for 9.5km past Buxton to the Cathedral Ranges State Park for a BBQ lunch before tackling the
Wells Cave Track to the top of the Cathedral Ranges on hand and foot.

The morning 4WDriving will start at Dom Dom Saddle car park
after travelling up from the bakery. There are a number of tracks in the area
that should be easy /medium at this time of year and will lead us out to the
Black Spur pub.  From there, we will be
back on the highway to the lunch meeting spot at the Sugarloaf Saddle picnic
spot within the Cathedral Ranges Park
(note: no dogs allowed).

For those that haven’t been to the top of the Cathedrals
before it is a bit of a challenge getting up to the top taking the Wells Cave
Track as it requires several stretches of rock climbing/scrambling and sliding
sideways through Wells Cave. All good fun but not for the feint heated and some care and attention will need to be applied. Alternatively, there is an
easier track that can be taken instead that is a little longer but which
arrives at the same spot. The views from the top on a clear day with an
elevation of 920m are pretty good in all directions. It takes about 45 minutes
to get to the top from the car park (about 500m straight up) and about the same
coming down the easier Canyon Track.

What to bring: BBQ
lunch, water bottle, day pack/bag, camera, decent rock climbing shoes and
normal 4WD gear (if doing the 4WD trip in the morning).  If kids are coming parents might want to bring a decent rope to potentially use as a safety harness (no, not to hang the precious little darlings) for nervous kids.
