We met on a chilly and foggy Saturday morning at the Mansfield Coffee Merchant. By the time we’d fuelled up on coffee and bacon and egg sandwiches it had turned into a beautiful sunny day.
Shooting around Eildon we broke off the main drag at Jamieson. Driving up steep and windy hill we turned onto Mt Terrible Tk to air down and start the day. Taking many small diversions and firebreaks it wasn’t long until we had few challenging and heart-pumping hill climbs. It was on one of the descents that we found little T-RAK sun-baking in the middle of the track.
Let me just say I’ve never seen I dark dingo, and when I picked up the little fella I never thought it could have been a Dingo. Instead I figured it was a hybrid of many different feral dogs. I guess if you look way back into his ancestry I could be right. Acting on our assumption that he was a feral dog he ended up making the rest of the trip with us, curled up in a warm snuggly, yet bumpy footwell.
The last hill climb up to Mt Terrible Hut was optional and definitely proved challenging with a couple of short winches and Russell in his 100 Series Landcruiser being the only victor, making it up in one go. A amazing clear view rewarded us at the Hut for lunch.
The afternoon consisted of us winding our way along the ridgeline taking a number of tracks that bought us to Ryan’s Hut. Our originally intended campsite it proved rather disappointing being on uneven ground and covered in mud. Scuttling a little further up the track we found a grassy spot to call home for the night.
With most people cooking over the fire the smells of home-made Chilli Con Carne and searing meats would definitely bring a smile to any seasoned camper. Something I was introduced to that night thanks to Russell was Chicken Ribs, let me tell you, they definitely won’t be forgotten easily!
The next day saw a seriously frosty morning with large puddles frozen over and small ones frozen solid! Continuing to traverse a couple of ridges we made our way down to Mt Matlock, still without a glimpse of snow. Another couple of tasty hillclimbs brought us to the Woods-Point Marysville Rd. With a little time to spare we made a dash for that one more Tk.
At first Oak’s Tk travelled like a regular dirt road, however rather quickly it turned into a muddy rollercoaster that provided plenty of laughs and little challenges. Taking a left at the bottom provided a similar amount of entertainment as we climbed out of the valley. It is at the finish of the track we ended our adventure, airing up and slapping some lunch together.
